Blair Castle Special Interest Guided Tour

Special interest guided tours of Blair Castle are available to groups by prior arrangement.

These guided group tours offer a fascinating insight into moments in history like the Jacobite rising and Queen Victoria's visit to Blair Castle. They may also pick up on areas of particular interest like gardening, needlework or military history. The tours are delivered by Jane Anderson, the Castle Archivist or experienced members of the castle guiding team. The price of a special interest guided tour includes access to the full castle exhibition.

Attics Tour

This "behind the scenes" guided tour of areas never before open to the public is not to be missed. On the guided tour you will be able to view artefacts not normally seen, explore rooms and corridors, and climb to the highest point in the castle. Not for the feint-hearted!

Duration: 90 minutes
Cost: £11 per person (group bookings minimum 10 guests*, maximum 12 guests)

Please note that this guided tour involves ascending many flights of spiral stairs and is only suitable for the fully able.

Lady Evelyn - The Great Embroiderer

Be thrilled by our extensive collection of exceptional needlework, not normally on display, worked and collected by Lady Evelyn Murray, daughter of 7th Duke of Atholl. Through our fascinating guided tour you will learn more about this talented lady of Atholl, her life and her work.

Conflict and Rebellion - The Jacobites

The Jacobite rising was a tumultuous time in Scottish history, rousing passions that saw brother opposed to brother, and fathers in conflict with sons. Discover the part played by the Atholl family during this dark and often bloody period of Scottish history.

A Royal Visit - Behind the Scenes

This guided tour explores the links between Blair Atholl and Queen Victoria, telling the story of her visits to Atholl, her discovery of the magic of the Highlands, and her special friendship with Duchess Anne.

The Atholl Highlanders

Discover the history behind The Atholl Highlanders, Europe’s last remaining private army from their beginnings as a bodyguard to Lord Glenlyon (later the 6th Duke), to mounting the guard during Queen Victoria’s stay at the Castle. Marvel at the newest addition to the collection, a heraldic shield decorated with the family coat of arms dating from 1839 and used at the first outing of the Atholl men.

Blair Castle Gardens

Created in the 18th century, Blair Castle is at the hub of a breathtaking historic landscape featuring a peaceful wooded grove, the ruined St Brides Kirk, a red deer park and whimsical gothic folly.  Discover the recently restored 9 acre walled Hercules Garden with landscaped ponds, folly, Chinese bridge and impressive orchard with more that 100 fruit trees.  Hear the fascinating history of the garden and the Duke who built it.

Duration: 60 minutes
Cost: £1 per person plus Gardens entry (group bookings minimum 12 guests*)

Twilight Tours

Enjoy a special opening and private guided tour of the castle outside of the normal visiting hours, plus a glass of wine and light refreshments on arrival.

The twilight tour lasts 90 minutes. The maximum number for the twilight tour is 25 people and there is a minimum charge of £300.
