Atholl Highland Ponies - History

The Highland ponies that live on Atholl Estates are carefully bred to ensure that the herd are true hill-type ponies, rather than diluting their traditional Highland qualities to breed lighter, showier ponies.

The hill ponies have wonderful even temperaments and are very docile. Indeed, their calm nature has led to our Highland ponies being described as 'bombproof'.

They are also incredibly strong, which is important when they are called upon to carry large stags. The strength, steady temperament and sure-footedness of our Highland ponies comes to the fore both out on the hills and when carrying inexperienced riders.

Our herd averages 30 ponies, including foals. Of these, around 16 are regularly used for trekking between Easter and late summer. We also use 15 Highland ponies during the deer stalking season, to carry deer from the hills down to the larder for preparation.

Novice and highly experienced riders are sure to enjoy riding with our Highland ponies. There are a number of different treks available, through which you can appreciate the spectacular beauty of the Scottish Highlands.
